5 tips for choosing sustainable jewellery

This last year the industry was filled with responsible pledges, but what does that all mean and is it just greenwashing?

Cambridge Dictionary says greenwashing is designed “to make people believe that your company is doing more to protect the environment than it really is.”

Sustainable diamond jewellery is a term that is being used more and more, but how do you navigate through the greenwashing to buy sustainable jewellery? The short answer is, you can’t. But there are lots of ways to make better, more responsible choices about buying fine jewellery.

Towards the end of 2020 the large established jewellery houses revealed their plans for responsible sourcing with pledges to achieve 100% traceability for precious metals and individual diamonds for a fairer, cleaner, healthier future by 2030.

The industry has been criticised for being slow to provide transparency however, with the pandemic focusing consumer values on ethics, the environment, and gender and diversity issues it seems the time has come for industry players to get on board with transparency.

5 Tips for choosing sustainable jewellery

  1. Ask for Recycled, Fairmined, Fairtrade, or Single Mine Origin Gold.

  2. Do your research on independent jewellers and their sourcing practices.

  3. Demand to know where the diamond is from.

  4. Don’t assume that recycled gold and lab grown stones get you off the hook.

  5. Don’t take “from trusted suppliers” as an answer to, “where is this diamond/metal/gemstone from?”.
